Acknowledging the Influence Of Music and Lifestyle
My daughter is studying to music and she was sharing some fascinating topics that she learned in school.
And yes it is music related.
Today, music is consumed by almost all youth after a certain age. They love the latest pop songs, sing them with their friends, and use them as notifications on their phones. They encompass their lives in a way for us as adults fail to connect to. It doesn't matter if it is hip hop, rap, soul, reggae, and and of the many others styles, young people have preferences for certain styles of music and it influences their growth and development.
It is natural that each person has different tastes, and listens to different styles depending on the mood that they currently find themselves in, or simply, because of our personality.
But does music influence our daily behavior?
Well, it does in fact; scientific evidence has shown that music plays an important role in the behavior, the individual's outlook is also effected. Indeed it makes sense when you stop and think about it on a personal level. The brain perceives music and analysis it in order to pass on the information, the intention of the music, that will play on your mind.
To put it simply, we can take the example of medical practices, gyms or school dining halls. Each of us have noticed the music in these situations, whether we consciously acknowledged it or not. In each of these contexts, a style of music is broadcast with the aim at; Motivating you when you are in the gym, relaxing you for medical practices or dinning in the cafeteria.
But what does this mean?
Why do we respond to music in such a complacent manner?
In order to better understand the theory, we need to analyze the many different styles of music, we need to understand the influence they have on different individuals (for brevity we will look at a couple of common types):
Soft music
You may or may not have been exposed to this type of music since soft music is considered pain-relieving music and it is often in medical environments. Still most of you have been at the dentist, it is common for soft music such as jazz to be played in the office. Studies have been conducted: when the patient is exposed to soft music, patients experience less anxiety and report that they felt less pain during the procedure.
This style of music therefore has a persuasive and soothing power that is highly appreciated by professions known to be painful when treating patients.
Classical music
How do some campuses reduce the unruly behavior of students in the dining area? A groundbreaking experiment was conducted by psychologist Lynne Chalmers and her colleagues at the University of North Dakota: they spent classical music in the dining room and observed quite convincing results. The research on "Music as a classroom tool" is quite fascinating and worth reading if you are in the position.
This experiment was conducted with 1,000 children in school between the 3nd and fifth grades. Over a three-month period, the team measures the noise level in the cafeteria and the children's behavior, depending on whether classical or pop music was played during the meal. The results revealed that, compared to the absence of music, there was a decrease of six decibels in the dining room (seven per cent of the usual volume) when playing classical music, and ten decibels (12% of the volume (usual sound) when it comes to pop music. As soon as the music is stopped, the volume of sound immediately increases. With respect to children's behavior, service personnel measured a dramatic 55% decrease in aggressive behavior (kicking, throwing objects), insults or rudeness, improved manners and return of items used for the meal at the time of departure. This decrease in aggressive or turbulent behavior is particularly noticeable with classical music. In addition, the team recorded the number of food impacts on walls in the presence or absence of classical music: a significant decrease in the number of impacts was observed in classical music situations.
Techno
Techno is everywhere in nightclubs, in the gym, where else have you heard it? Have you ever wondered why, why this particular music?
It's indeed based on our psychological response.
Studies have shown that this music has a strong potential to motivate individuals to exercise and boost their physical performance. Nancy Becker and her colleagues at Pennsylvania's Ursinus College gave physical exercise to children aged 9 to 11, adults aged 18 to 55, and seniors aged 60 to 80. Participants had to cycle for two minutes, between two fixed points. The goal was to travel the longest distance during this time. Some pedaled against a background of techno music, others against a background of soft music, others finally in silence. Techno music is particularly "doping": while in the absence of music, subjects averaged three quarters of a mile, they reached one mile with soft music, and one and a tenth miles with techno music, this effect having been observed throughout the test subjects, even the older ones.
In conclusion, music is a useful way to play on the psychological nature of human behavior! Depending on the style of music, your brain will react differently. This can therefore allow you to have some control over the psychological and therefore has beneficial effects on your morale!
